 Rage Caught On Radar
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 2:09 PM
Category: Rage

A quick visit to Games Radar reveals a Rage Preview.
The setting is definitely Earth, but a post-apocalyptic vision of our terran turf, many years after a catastrophic comet impact. Id aren’t keen to give away the whole picture just yet, but you’ll play a character from the past, part of a plan to rebuild society after the comet hit.
Have a look at that on Games Radar.

 Doom 3 To Doom 2 v0.7

Nemesis pointed out this Doom 3 to Doom 2 mod over on Doom 3 Files. Apparently this mod was updated to v0.7 and makes Doom 3 play more like Doom 2.... which basically means more monsters and more frames per second. Might be worth a download but that's up to you...

Now you can grab some Punishment Grenades off of Doom 3 Files thanks to stylezzzjasonxxx.
The grenades are basically an on-contact explosive that is also trip activated, kind of like using proxy mines. He also decided to load the rocketlauncher with Napalm rockets, exploding into a fireball. Humm.....
Load up on those Punishment Grenades.

 No Content Cut From Rage
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 12:36 PM
Category: Rage

I'm not sure if I missed something, but Tim Willits explained that they decided to make 2 large wastelands instead of 5 small ones and then it was assumed some content got chopped from Rage, but that is not the case at all.
During my talk today I mentioned that we originally wanted to have around 5 or 6 smaller wasteland environments but later decided instead to have 2 larger wastelands. Mostly because we were going to be shipping on two DVDs for the 360 and felt that it would play better with one large wasteland on each disc so there would be no loading between wastelands. Not loading levels while you drive around is a much better decision regardless of platform.

There was NO CONTENT removed from RAGE because of the 360--NONE AT ALL. Moving from multiple wastelands into fewer but larger wastelands was a far better decision and is actually giving us more gameplay in the game.
So there you go... read more right here on Shack News.

Ismaele Retires And You Can Downgrab His Last Maps
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 6:27 PM
Category: DOOM

Ismaele updated Outpost Of Doom II with the news that he has indeed retired as a wad designer.
With this words and my very last maps for DM I officially leave the DooM Community as .WADster: I don't think I'll go back... I haven't got any more free time and, above all, I haven't got any more inspiration! I thank you for all solidarity messages I received, nevertheless I retire... as .WAD author. But I'll stay here as player and reviewer: I keep playing and reviewing.
Also you can downgrab his last maps, Judas32, Outpost of Hell - DeathMatch and Blitz - DeathMatch.

Category: DOOM

Apparently Potnop released a set of six singleplayer maps for Doom 2 that is called Data Center, as can be seen in this thread on our forum.
This is a six map level pack about a data center invaded by demons and you have to weed them out before they steal the UAC's secrets. The levels are filled with fun surprises that don't get old IMO.
You can download Data Center thanks to /id games.

 Korax On Ultimate Quake Engine
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:44 PM
Category: Quake

Korax posted this thread on the Raven-Games forum concerning his Ultimate Quake Engine project. First up is this UQE Journal page and the newest info on there is at the top.The Ultimate Quake Engine is not to be confused with The Unofficial Quake Engine.
Ultimate Quake Engine is a brand new from the ground-up engine I'm working on, designed in C#, that is a combination of all the skills and experience I've built up over the years regarding the Quake architecture. Ultimate Quake Engine will take the best features/ideas from NewHexen, UQE Hexen2 and Quake 3 Arena and put it all together in one modernized .NET/XNA based engine.
So hit that Journal and the thread for more info.

 Check Out Some Theta Labs
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:19 AM
Category: DOOM

Today we have a singleplayer map for Doom 3 that was put together by djgrapes and this one is called Theta Labs.
The background of Theta Labs (v1.0) is a simple one, an emergency call was received in the military centre, located at the UAC's Theta Research Labs; The scientists calling raised caution flags at the centre, which caused the military brass to decide to send in one of their own to find out exactly what is going on. You are sent in because of this, your mission is a simple one, you need to go in there and examine the facility and find out what happened, should you need to, your secondary mission is to liquidate everything that poses a danger.
Take a crack at those Theta Labs over on Doom 3 Files.

 Quake Live Interview
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:39 AM
Category: Quake

There's a Interview with John Carmack & Marty Stratton over on Computer and Video Games where they mostly talk about Quake Live.
In the beginning Quake Live will be completely ad-supported, it's not out of the question that eventually we'll have some kind of a premium service. But we don't know what it's going to be yet, and we're certainly going out with the completely free-to-play model.

Cast Your Vote In The Fan Fiction Map Contest
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:25 AM
Category: DOOM

The entries are in for the Fan Fiction Map Contest and Fatal has decided to go with a poll for the judging portion of the deal.
The contest has entered the phase where we evaluate how well the mappers have succeeded. I'm keeping the maps anonymous for now, only revealing the story they're based on, and once the poll has been going on for a week or so, reveal who made which map. In the zip there are 5 (ONLY FIVE! You failed me, Newdoomians ) wads, with names containing their poll letter (from a to e) as well as the fan fiction they are based on , with the names corresponding the vote options.
So grab the maps in this thread and remember to vote!

 Paranoid Progress Update
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 1:40 PM
Category: DOOM

ReX has been busy with travel and has more work done on Paranoid.
I have made considerable more progress on Paranoid, but the more I do the more I find I want to do. Map04 was originally designed to have a very small sewer area, leading to a prison complex, then canyons. The "small sewer area" has morphed into a gigantic water treatment complex, and thus I haven't yet gotten to the prison area (which I now will probably keep fairly small. I also got heavily into actual room-over-room mapping.

 The Dark Mod Update
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:19 PM
Category: DOOM

If you hit The Dark Mod site you can view a video of animated sky boxes... which isn't new but I don't remember seeing it before. Also they say they have added a working conversation system for the AI to talk to each other, plus an objective editor.
In other coding news, Ishtvan has started to physicalize player and AI weapons as the first step in our combat system. TDM combat will work slightly different than Thief. Press 'attack' and move the mouse in a direction to choose the attack. Right and left do slashes, down does an overhead attack, and up does a thrust attack.
There is some more.... go over there to read it. Me tired... it got late.... need sleeps.
