 Endgame Megawad Revealed
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 7:50 AM
Category: DOOM

Bob Larkin of the Doom Wad Station sends along this message concerning a new megawad project that's called Endgame:
We have put together a fairly decent array of mappers who are working on a project called Endgame - a megawad replacement, in the works, for Doom2. The maps include new textures, new music, ambient sounds, etc... It is designed for Gzdoom/Zdoom but probably looks best in Gzdoom (of course).
Check out the Endgame site for more info, including screenshots and a 6 level downgrab.

John Carmack Takes The Lunar Lander Challenge
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 1:33 PM
Category: General

Apparently back on the 21st of October John Carmack took part in NASA's Lunar Lander Challenge and unfortunately the craft he was remotely piloting ended up crashing.
The craft—nicknamed “Pixel”—came down too fast causing breakage of landing legs. Fire damage caused by the hard landing has curtailed the vehicle’s second flight - needed to claim NASA prize money. Depending on overnight fixes to software and hardware, another attempt at grabbing Lunar Lander Challenge money may be attempted.
After SpaceShipOne took home the X-Prize in 2004, the X-Prize Cup became an annual event. This year, there was only one entry in the Lunar Lander Challenge: John Carmack's Armadillo Aerospace, which fielded a pair of rockets named Pixel and Texel. Unfortunately, Pixel crashed and Texel didn't fly.
By the way Carmack's Armadillo Aerospace was the only team competing this year for the Lunar Challenge Event. Read more here. Thanks to Boingo for posting about this right here on our forums, or I wouldn't of noticed this bit of news. Also there's more links to related articles in Boingo's thread, if you're interested.

 Full Shadows Mod
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:00 PM

If you jump onto Doom 3 Files you can grab part one and part two of the Doom 3 Fullshadows mod. If you do go over there, Doom 3 Files is still having some stupid redirect error, so you'll have to hit the stop button on your browser to keep the error page from loading. heh. If that makes any sense....

Category: DOOM

Here we go again to Doom Wad Station for anouther level review. This time we get to check out Archviles Temple and here is a blurb:
If you are an Uber Doomer, you will probably find this map to your liking. It is difficult and should present an interesting play for that skill level. For me, it was VERY hard but I muddled through, often times with only 4% health!
Check out that Archviles Temple review.

More id Software Games On XBox Live
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:48 AM
Category: General

According to the Firing Squad we can expect to see more id Software games on XBox Live Arcade for the 360 console, including Doom II, Final Doom, Hexen, Heretic, Wolfenstein 3D and Commander Keen. Firing Squad contacted Todd Hollenshead about this subject:
We're looking at bringing some of the other games to XLA, but a lot is going to depend on the response to DOOM. From what MS tells us, its been fantastic so far, which bodes well for other id "classics" to be released there. But there's nothing concrete. Making the surprise announcement at X06 for DOOM worked out great, so I'll be tight lipped about anything specific for now :)
Here is the link to the article.

 PRBoom 2.4.6 Released

Category: DOOM

PrBoom 2.4.6 was just released today with quite a few fixes that include:
  • Mac OS X: Fixed music volume slider.
  • Implemented patch clipping. This fixes bug #1557501.
  • Fixed update of compatibility options after use of TNTCOMP cheat.
  • Reenabled padding if short or missing reject lumps. Patch #1570517 by RjY.
  • Removed unaligned memory access in r_drawflush.inl. This should fix bus errors on architectures where unaligned access is forbidden and should give a slight speedup on other architectures.
  • Stop right after the quit sound stops, instead of waiting three seconds.
  • Fixed sound origin for switches. This is compatibility optioned. Patch #1533045 by RjY.
  • Fixed "oof" sound when hitting ground while already dead. Patch #1532700 by RjY.
  • Ported Eternitys fix to show the "ouch" face when severly hit.
  • Unified drawing functions, this speeds things up a bit and fixes most artifacts on small numbers and fonts in high resolution modes.
  • Mac OS X: Add resolution and video mode (OpenGL vs software) selection to launcher.
  • Added rendering filters for software mode, they are configurable in a new page in general settings.
  • Emulate some texture composition bugs
  • Fix more common WAD bugs that can cause crashes.
  • Fixed random crashes caused by use of uninitialized memory.
  • Fix some demo incompatibilities caused by slime trail removal.
  • Fixed crashes with WADs which use newer gl nodes or don't have any nodes.
  • Automatically load gwa files with gl nodes.
  • Fixed integer overrun in automap on large levels (from PrBoom+)
Go check downgrab the new version.

 KS12 Review
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:23 AM
Category: DOOM

KS12 for Doom 2 has gotten itself reviewed over on Doom Wad Station.
What do you get when you combine, arguably, one of the best texture and sprite replacements (from Neodoom) with one of the best mappers in the business? You get KS12 - a large, well thought out map with tons of tricks and traps, a seemingly endless supply of bad guys and a whole new environment with new creatures and new weapons to play with. If you played Neodoom then you know what I'm talking about as far as the visuals go. If you've played Cory's work before then you know that he is a master at not only mapping but gameplay as well. And, in this combination, we have what I consider one of the best maps of the year to come my way. Join me in my reverance of this work and start fragging something!
Check out KS12.

Anouther XBox 360 Review Of Doom
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 12:12 PM
Category: DOOM

Here is anouther review of Doom that has appeared since it's availability for the XBox 360. Put a hit on GameDaily and read the full Doom Review. Here is a snip:
The gameplay is pretty solid, spread out with dual-analog support and a friendly interface that makes items easy to access. Weapon switching was no problem whatsoever, and the ability to strafe comes real easy, especially if you're outrunning the larger monsters. The game's pretty challenging in single-player mode, with different difficulty levels offered and a few unlockable Achievements waiting to be added to your Gamerscore.
That's all on GameDaily.

 Doom On XBox 360 Review
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 3:14 PM
Category: DOOM

Just when you thought you'd not see anouther Doom review, EuroGamer has gone and posted one, covering the recent addition of the game to XBox 360.
Unlike a lot of games that came out at the start of that difficult transition from 2D to 3D, Doom stands the test of time thanks to fantastic, memorable level design, a refined control system, a perfect weapon balance, the list goes on. When Bungie spoke of basing Halo on the "30 seconds of fun over and over" design ethic, it was a principle Doom got right from the opening level onwards.
So yeah, check out that Doom Review over on EuroGamer.
